Bontshetse elevates to BFA Top 3

-

to ascend the Botswana Football Association second vice president seat. The assembly, which came on the backdrop of the hotly contested regional elections saw at least five ( 5) regions abstain to vote during Bontshetse versus Sesinyi round of voting, sparking controversy on what could be the cause for their actions.

The assembly however, ratified Masego Nchingane as the association’s first vice president, assuming the seat which was left vacant after the resignation of former vice president, Marshlow Motlogelwa in February this year. Bontshetse was part of team Sebego in 2020 BFA elective general assembly and lost to Motlogelwa by a slim margin of one ( 1) vote, a decision he appealed citing voting irregularity.

Sources close to developments at Lekidi have told BG Sport that Bontshetse had wanted to challenge Nchingane for the 1st Vice President post but the current football leadership engaged him in talks and convinced him to settle for the 2nd VP post. Before accepting the request of the BFA, Bontshetse reportedly sent an ultimatum to the BFA leadership, demanding that, his acceptance of the 2nd VP post can only happen if the association agrees to reinstate the duo of Setete Phuthego and former NEC member Tico Kamati.

The duo have been banned from local football activities in the wake of Onkarabile Ratanang’s infamous registration saga as they were seen to have played a pivotal role in the saga.

The BFA and the BFL have lost all the cases relating to the matter and it was believed that Setete and Kamati could possibly go on to be cleared of any wrongdoing. Although he did not physically attend the OGA, Phuthego was seen around Royal Aria and even celebrated Bontshetse’s victory later on at the same venue.

With Bontshetse now part of the NEC, questions over the current regime’s ability to hold on to power in the next elective congress have surfaced, Bontshetse is not new in football administration and he has been a strong advocate for promotion and development of regional football structures and sponsorship acquisition.
