IF KHAMA IS NOT KGOSI

-

If Khama is not a kgosi as the state contends in its court papers, then there will be far- reaching implications that go beyond whether or not he quali es to nominate Seretse Peter Khama as Bangwato Regent. Some questions in examination papers require candidates to name traditional leaders and the nature of an exam is that getting a single answer wrong or right can mean the di erence between passing and failing. On the basis of the latter, it is reasonable to assume that some candidates passed by that one mark that identi ed Khama as Bangwato kgosi. If the government says Khama is not Bangwato kgosi, then the people that a government- run examinations body awarded marks for saying that he is, should have their exam scripts reviewed with a view to deducting such marks. Some would have to re- sit for examinations and those sponsored through university and now employed in the civil service would have to reimburse the government. e money they return could be used to complete Steve Harvey’s studio at Btv and sponsor the next ve editions of Forbes 30 Under 30. Only a kgosi who has been garbed with a royal animal- skin coat can garb a new kgosi.

What that means is that if Khama is not kgosi, then the man we know as Kgosi

Kgafela II, who was garbed by Khama in his capacity as Bangwato kgosi, is also not kgosi. For what it’s worth, the latter would actually be good news for Kgafela because the charge sheet and court papers that identify him as Kgosi Kgafela II would be invalid and the state would have no case against him.
