Gambling Authority introduces electronic games policy
Gambling Authority of Botswana has introduced the Digital, Virtual, Interactive, and Short Message Service ( SMS) Competitions, Games, and Quizzes Policy which will regulate and oversee competitions conducted electronically and via SMS platforms, ensuring transparency, fairness, and consumer protection. e Digital, Virtual, Interactive, and SMS Competitions, Games, and Quizzes Policy establishes clear guidelines and procedures for the regulation of these activities, setting regulatory parameters for their conduct, and ensuring transparency and accountability by operators. e authority stated that entities intending to conduct Digital, Virtual, Interactive, and SMS Competitions, Games, and Quizzes are required to apply for registration with the Gambling Authority in accordance with the established regulatory framework. “Applicants must submit detailed documentation outlining the intended purpose of the proposed competition, certi ed copies of relevant registrations, detailed rules or terms and conditions, and a comprehensive proposal outlining various aspects of the competition.” Fees associated with applications and services are outlined in the policy, with an application fee of P1, 000 and a service fee calculated at 10 percent of the Gross Gaming Revenue, payable monthly. Gambling Authority further explained that consumer protection measures are paramount, with operators mandated to provide clear and accurate information, establish channels for customer support and complaints resolution, implement responsible gaming measures, and ensure fairness and integrity in competition systems. “Prior to the commencement of competitions, operators are required to ful l certain conditions, including providing proof of available prizes, ensuring compliance with all laws of Botswana, and displaying appropriate warnings for underage persons.” e Gambling Authority emphasizes that non- compliance with the provisions of this policy may result in suspension or revocation of registration, and periodic reviews will be conducted to ensure its e ectiveness and relevance.
