Gambling Authority introduces electronic games policy

Gambling Authority of Botswana has introduced the Digital, Virtual, Interactiv­e, and Short Message Service ( SMS) Competitio­ns, Games, and Quizzes Policy which will regulate and oversee competitio­ns conducted electronic­ally and via SMS platforms, ensuring transparen­cy, fairness, and consumer protection. e Digital, Virtual, Interactiv­e, and SMS Competitio­ns, Games, and Quizzes Policy establishe­s clear guidelines and procedures for the regulation of these activities, setting regulatory parameters for their conduct, and ensuring transparen­cy and accountabi­lity by operators. e authority stated that entities intending to conduct Digital, Virtual, Interactiv­e, and SMS Competitio­ns, Games, and Quizzes are required to apply for registrati­on with the Gambling Authority in accordance with the establishe­d regulatory framework. “Applicants must submit detailed documentat­ion outlining the intended purpose of the proposed competitio­n, certi ed copies of relevant registrati­ons, detailed rules or terms and conditions, and a comprehens­ive proposal outlining various aspects of the competitio­n.” Fees associated with applicatio­ns and services are outlined in the policy, with an applicatio­n fee of P1, 000 and a service fee calculated at 10 percent of the Gross Gaming Revenue, payable monthly. Gambling Authority further explained that consumer protection measures are paramount, with operators mandated to provide clear and accurate informatio­n, establish channels for customer support and complaints resolution, implement responsibl­e gaming measures, and ensure fairness and integrity in competitio­n systems. “Prior to the commenceme­nt of competitio­ns, operators are required to ful l certain conditions, including providing proof of available prizes, ensuring compliance with all laws of Botswana, and displaying appropriat­e warnings for underage persons.” e Gambling Authority emphasizes that non- compliance with the provisions of this policy may result in suspension or revocation of registrati­on, and periodic reviews will be conducted to ensure its e ectiveness and relevance.
