Use the amounts here as a rough guide. Prices may change at short notice. Some fees (e.g. carbon tax) will vary according to the size of your vehicle’s engine.

Botswana

Fees are payable in pula – you can exchange rand for pula at most border posts, usually informally. Vehicle fee: P190 (R240). If you’re planning to exit and re- enter Botswana during the same holiday (usually the case if you add Caprivi to your itinerary) it’s better to pay for a multiple entry pass.

Namibia

You can pay in rand (cash). Vehicle fee: R242; trailer: R154.

Zambia

Some fees are payable in (US$) only and others in kwacha (K). You can exchange dollars for kwacha informally at most borders – check the exchange rate beforehand. Carbon tax: K150 (R204, for a vehicle with a 3-litre engine). Insurance: K305 (R415). Council levy: K30 (R41). Toll: US$20 (R277).

Zimbabwe

Entering Zim is expensive, and fees are paid in US$. Carbon tax: US$15 (R208). Insurance: US$30 (R416). Road tax: US$10 (R139).
