With the emergence of many young local authors in recent times, a young vibrant lady Masego Thato Mogapi has penned a Setswana novel titled Pelo Ya Motsadi Moloi. The book was published on April 25, 2022 by Poetic Blood Publishers.

In an interview with Arts & Culture, Mogapi said the book cautions children against the consequences of neglecting their parents. She explained that the main character in the novel by the name Kabelo, the only son to her mother, who was from a less privileged background promised his family heaven on earth as he left home for better life in the city. He, however, failed to fulfill his promises therefore leaving his mother heartbroken. At home the struggle became even worse and real.

“We continue seeing the main character being veiled by women. He took care of his ladies while in cohabitation. The lady whom he first met lived a lavish lifestyle because of him. Tragedy struck when he got dismissed from his high paying job. He found himself swimming in debts that he made without even thinking. The main character decided to leave the town and go back home but things did not go according to plan.

“He again met a petite beautiful lady by the bus rank who took him

to her house and introduced him into another lifestyle. In the main character’s eyes, he thought he was recovering though the petite lady was still deceiving him. He tried to settle down with her; unfortunately the lady did not tell him about her health. He went back home without anything but a sick burden to his mother and nephew. He refused to seek for medical attention therefore he died,” she narrated.

Mogapi said her book was inspired by true life events. The 28-years-old author said she was inspired to write the book looking at the life challenges and hiccups that people go through in everyday life. She pointed out that her decision to write the novel in her native language was because she grew up being taught Setswana by her late grandmother.

Writing a book can never be an easy task. As such, Mogapi encountered challenges along the way before she could get her final copy to publication. Commenting on the challenges she encountered when writing the book, she said lack of a resources made her writing progress slow.

She added that she also had financial constraints. Mogapi advised aspiring writers to work hard to achieve their goals. She said things of this world must not mislead them. She added that she was willing to grow and continue publishing literature in both Setswana and English languages. The cover price for the novel is P100. For orders, contact 71756864.
