Badminton in hunt for new coach

- KABELO BORANABI

The Botswana Badminton Association (BBA) has admitted it faces obstacles in the hunt for new national team coaches. Through its social media platforms, the BBA put an advert for new senior and junior team heads and assistant coaches.

The applicants, as per the advert, are required to have Badminton World Federation (BWF) Level 1 and OK coaching qualifications with a minimum of two years of experience as a coach at a club or national team. However, the post is on a voluntary basis while the deadline for applications is July 20. Speaking to Mmegi Sport, BBA public relations officer, Thobo Tshosa admitted that the association is constrained by finances to go full swing for the best people for the job. The BBA executive committee recently announced the association is P100,000 in the red. “We are looking at a wide range of scope of coaches.

We would like to have international coaches but we acknowledge that we have financial constraints so we might not attract many coaches from outside. The job itself is on a voluntary basis and we have to admit we might not have a lot of applicants from outside the country.”

“Locally, we have some of the best coaches; qualified coaches we have worked with before and those who had shown that they would be willing to work with us. So we believe that the post will attract a good number of aspirants.

At the moment I do not know the number of applicants we have received. I will have to confirm with our technical director,” Tshosa said. Harold Ndaba is the current senior national team coach. Meanwhile, the BBA has announced the tournament dates for the Botswana Open, which will be held on August 27-28.
