Myeni raring to go after sealing VTM move
Debswana First Division South league newcomers, VTM FC have underlined their ambitions with the signing of former Bafana Bafana winger, Sfiso Myeni. The winger has played for elite clubs in South Africa including Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, and Bidvest Wits.
The 34-year-old has become the most decorated player in the local second-tier football as he has two league championships on his CV while he has won two domestic cups. Myeni has also played in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup.
The winger has, however, had a rough period on the sidelines in the last few seasons. After leaving Wits in 2018, the player has never commanded a starting place in any team.
He was given a chance to revive his career at South Africa’s second-tier sides TS Sporting and Stellenbosch but failed to impress.
The man who has fallen from grace has now found a home at the Gamononyane-based VTM and he told Mmegi Sport that he is raring to go when the league campaign gets underway in October.
Mmegi: Your move to VTM came as a bit of a shock. Kindly tell us, how did the move come about?
Myeni: No, I would not say it has come as a shock because the transfer window is open and players can move. I have been in contact with VTM FC, we have been for a long while now, hence now I have signed for the club.
Mmegi: What did you know about Botswana football and VTM FC before you agreed to sign with the club?
Myeni: I have been following Botswana football on social media platforms. I have also been following VTM FC on social media. I must say I first met the club and the club management in 2018 while I was still playing for SuperSport
United. The team was having its pre-season camp in Rustenburg, South Africa against some of the local clubs. At the time SuperSport was also having a preseason in Rustenburg. I managed to meet with some of the VTM FC officials and we have been in contact since.
Mmegi: Did you have any other offers before signing with VTM?
Myeni: I had offers, yes. I would not disclose the names of the teams, which were interested in signing me. I did have offers but I ended up choosing VTM.
Mmegi: Why?
Myeni: I met with the chairman and the other people from the club’s management. I liked the vision they had for the club, so I thought I should come here and be part of the project.
Mmegi: How have your first days been thus far?
Myeni: I felt at home immediately. I loved the reception I was given. From leaving the airport in South Africa to arriving at the airport here in Botswana. They were with me all the way. The welcome at the airport in Gaborone was also amazing. The supporters were there, waiting to welcome me, I was so surprised. I am just happy to be here.
Mmegi: After some time on the sidelines, how ready are you in terms of fitness?
Myeni: I am not there yet, but I can train and play more before the league starts. I think I can be there. I just need to train more and with the help of the technical team and my teammates. I think by the time the league starts, I will be fit to play.
Any personal targets ahead of the start of the league?
Myeni: No, I don’t [have any]. I believe it is all about the team. My target is the team’s target in general. I want to help the team achieve those targets.
