UB IN KANYE TO PAY TRIBUTE
TO SIR KETUMILE MASIRE
On October 14, the University of Botswana together with the communities of GaNgwaketse will celebrate the university’s 40th anniversary in Kanye and also pay tribute to its founding Chancellor, the late Sir Ketumile Masire.
One of the most profound national leaders, Sir Ketumile believed that education was an integral part of Botswana’s socio-economic development. It was against this background that following his graduation from Tigerkloof in 1950 he became instrumental in founding Seepapitso Secondary School. Sir Ketumile believed that self-actualization both at individual and national levels was void if it was not grounded on education. The University of Botswana’s 40-year journey is reflective of Sir Ketumile’s vision on education.
He is one of the pioneering national figures that contributed ideas to the University of Botswana (UB) from its formative years in the decade after independence, to being the modern institution it is today.Sir Ketumile had always been there, from the days UB became a separate institution that evolved from the University of Botswana and Swaziland (UBS), and before that the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS). He is one of the national leaders who worked hard for UB during its early years, and continued to be a pillar of support.
