Netball hosts charity tournament
The Botswana Netball Association (BONA) will host a mini-charity netball fundraising event dubbed ‘The Charity Mini Netball Tournament’ this weekend. The tournament takes place on Saturday and Sunday at the BONA Courts.
BONA spokesperson, Mokeresete Mokeresete said they saw it fit to organise the tournament as the association has been struggling over the years to support its officials.
“Due to insufficient funds to fully take care of our officials, both match and technical officials we found it necessary to have a fundraising event which can help us raise funds to meet the needs of our officials,” Mokeresete said.
“As this is a charity event, it is not only about raising funds for the match officials but also raising funds for the less privileged people who are struggling to make ends meet in life,” he added.
He said BONA, through the North Zone committee, intends to assist needy people in the north with toiletry and food. The hampers will be presented during the Lucara Botswana Netball League Top 8 game. In the South, funds will be used to assist young girls with sanitary pads and the South Zone committee will identify beneficiaries. Mixed teams affiliated with the Botswana Netball League will participate in the weekend tournament.
The Under-20 team has been included in the tournament as a way to assist the side prepare for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games to be held in Malawi in December.
Mokeresete said preparations for the weekend tournament have gone well without a hiccup. BONA will release the tournament schedule tomorrow, as the organising committee is still putting the final touches on the timetable.
Since the tournament is a charity event, there will be no prize money and BONA hopes for a good turnout to support a good cause.
