G-West ‘Lontone’ brings Gospel Night

- KABELO BORANABI

‘Lontone’, as the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) is commonly known in Botswana, will this Saturday host its maiden Gospel Night concert.

The event is organised by the UCCSA Gaborone West (G-West) church choir and will be held at the Mogoditshane branch. Speaking to Arts & Culture, the event organiser, Nomsa Palai said the main purpose of the event is to raise funds to complete a church structure in Block 6 location in Gaborone.

“The event is aimed at raising funds for the building of the temple or church, which in future can be used as a resource centre. We currently have a small structure, which cannot accommodate all the members and therefore we found it befitting to raise funds to build a structure that can accommodate more members. Our numbers increase year in, year out therefore we need a structure that can accommodate a large number of members,” Palai said.

The Gospel Night concert is headlined by Gale D Bird, Tshenolo Mosimane, Majezi Jnr and Kagiso Morebodi. There will also be special performances by Kessy Tumisang, Reggie Kopi, Joe Mos and Shebeleza.

Palai stated that they wanted to incorporate all sounds of the religious music in order to accommodate members of other Christian churches. She said some artists would be spicing up their gospel sounds with the African traditional instruments as the revellers are tipped to have fun while praising with a purpose of improving the church infrastructure. “The event is the first of its own kind. We have never had an event like this which we believe that it will be our yearly event. We have had other fundraising activities but not of this kind,” she explained.

She continued: “As the organisers we have not only focused on the UCCSA members and UCCSA hymns, we are looking at other churches members. In this regard we believe members of other churches will come and grace the event.

It is a gospel night music concert but we have made it in a way that it will be interesting because we are bringing an Africa taste, like we got Marabi and other artists will bring some elements such as Moropa and others.” Tickets for the concert are selling at P150 standard ticket and the VIP access is P500 while the event is scheduled to start at 6pm.
