Bohloko in line for international award

- GOITSEMODIMO KAELO

South African (SA) based Motswana videographer, Jack Bohloko is over the moon following his first international award nomination. The renowned videographer has been listed among other internationals for the Video Director of the Year award for the eight edition of the African Entertainment Awards USA 2022 (AEUSA) scheduled for December 23, 2022. AEAUSA is a non-profit organisation established in New Jersey, USA, to support, celebrate and uplift African entertainment and achievements. According to information on its website, the organisation uses entertainment as a platform to showcase an Africa that is united, self-sufficient, willing and able to evoke social change that matters most in the communities of Africans all over the world.

The awards recently unveiled nominees for different categories where a number of regional creatives including Bohloko made the cut.

Bohloko surprised many people in 2020 when he announced a desire to leave his comfort zone in Botswana to test waters and find new challenge in the neighbouring country.

While he had shown huge potential locally, there was concern that the selftaught videographer could struggle to penetrate the tough SA market. However, Bohloko has easily found his way into the market, doing calculations for some of the biggest artists in South Africa.

In an interview with Arts & Culture following the nominees’ announcement, Bohloko said he was elated that his work is getting international recognition. “I only learnt about the Awards after being nominated. I am happy to be noticed and listed among other great African Videographers,” he said.

He said win or lose, he is humbled and honoured to have been nominated. Bohloko said his move to South Africa has been a blessing as his work is now exposed to the international market.

“Being in SA is really a blessing. It’s a big platform for me to try my luck on and I hope one of the days, my name and work will be exposed to other parts of the world,” he added.

Since relocating to SA, Bohloko has worked with several artists like Kay SA, Krystal, Fiso Seni, Master KG, Makhadzi, Ntate Stunna, Malome Vector just to name but a few.

Locally, he has shot high quality music videos for big artists like Vee Mampeezy, Charma Gal, LaTimmy, Dramaboi, Amantle Brown amongst others. Some of the music videos he directed have garnered million views on YouTube. Before relocating to SA, Bohloko had won the best award in video production for four consecutive years during the President’s Day competitions, which have since been renamed the National Arts Festivals.
