As our last edition for the year 2023 hits the shelves today, we look back with pride and fulfilment as team Mmegi, after churning out 50 solid editions. It may have not been easy battling with deadlines, but together as a team we have made it possible to ensure our readers enjoyed uninterrupted access to our conventional editions and online platforms which were always beaming to the seams with ‘The news we need to know.’
It’s during moments like these that we look back and count our achievements and failures. The end of the year is a crucial moment to introspect and often times it helps us prepare very well for the year ahead knowing exactly what our challenges would look like.
We could have not achieved anything without our often times hostile readers who kept us on our toes with their unreasonable scathing attacks and constructive criticism across all our social platforms. We say to our readers that we are employed to serve you with the news menu every week, a challenge we are prepared to fulfil any day. We cannot claim that we did not face challenges. We did. But, at the end of the day it was more about how we dealt with our challenges that mattered, than burying our heads in the sand.
Looking back into our history, Mmegi newspaper started off as a community newspaper at Swaneng Hill School in Serowe in 1960 where it was called Mmegi-Wa-Dikgang. The modern version of Mmegi was established in 1984. We definitely now know the type of reader who is following us from across the societal divide; the students, policy-makers, intellectuals and the business community.
Mmegi still belongs to the people as it was then and as the people’s publication, it is the people who can elevate it to the top so that it can serve them diligently in a democratic dispensation where we know the media plays a crucial role.
We further shout kudos to the Mmegi team, which we have captured elsewhere in this newspaper so that you can appreciate them through the various newspaper sections.
As we go into the year 2024, we will definitely need you our reader, the more, for the survival of our newspaper. Keep sharing information with us without fear, for we can only do well with your input. We have gone an extra mile by providing a section of Dear Editor, where we expect you to write expressing yourselves over many issues of concern.
We take this opportunity to thank all those who helped us have a fruitful year, from our senior management and everybody. We wish our valued readers and clients a merry Christmas and happy New Year. Please remember that on January 8, 2024, we will be back at work to continue where we would have left.
