Anxiety for BDP primary elections aspirants

- TSAONE BASIMANEBOTLHE Staff Writer

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is on the verge of announcing the official list of candidates for the primary elections, bringing both anticipation and anxiety for those hoping to run for the election set for next month.

While the party has planned a golf day today as a leisurely event, it may end up being a fraught affair when some aspiring candidates learn that they have not been selected. The moment of truth will undoubtedly bring surprises and disappointments for many, with potential consequences on the party’s internal politics and morale.

Those aggrieved by party primary election vetting will not have anything to fall on, as the party constitution clearly states that the party Central Committee makes the final decision on the matter. Therefore, any aggrieved member of the party after the list has been announced will not get a chance to appeal anywhere.

The BDP constitution states that all prospective candidates whose names have been submitted to the branch committee shall be vetted by such a committee with a view to recommending to the central committee for approval or disapproval of such person as a candidate for such election.

However, it also says with respect to the vetting of local government candidates, the branch committee shall invite the chairperson and secretary of the respective wards. According to the constitution, things that need to be considered when vetting include integrity, personality, commitment to the party, ability to represent the party and the public if elected and all other qualifications and disqualifications under the electoral laws of Botswana. Furthermore, it states that all prospective candidates who have been ruled to have failed to comply with party procedures, regulations and guidelines shall be disqualified to stand as candidates. Again, the party constitution emphasises that the date of the primary elections shall be determined by the central committee, and this date shall give sufficient time for preparations before national elections. Some of the prominent names that are likely to be vetted out include musician, Odirile Sento popularly known as Vee Mampeezy who wanted to contest for Gaborone Central. Vee Mampeezy was expected to face incumbent MP Tumisang Healy.

In Gaborone South Kesego Okie, who is a well-known communications expert, is also reportedly vetted out. She was gearing up for a contest with the incumbent legislator and minister Dumizweni Mthimkhulu. At Molepolole South which has been embroiled in wars, Godfrey Sibisibi who was the main challenger to the Minister of State President and current MP Kabo Morwaeng is said to have also been vetted out. Reports also indicate that former MP in the Lobatse constituency, Sadique Kebonang, has been vetted out. Meanwhile, nominated councillor Lotty Manyepedza and BDP chief whip Liakiat Kablay who were vetted out by the branch committees have been brought back to the race by the central committee.
