MOLAO ADVOCATES FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVESTOCK FARMING AT SANDVELD FIELD DAY
The Minister of Agriculture, Fidelis Molao, emphasised the importance of sustainable and profitable livestock farming practices in Botswana while speaking at the recent Sandveld Field Day. The event, held under the theme, “Sustainable and Profitable Livestock Farming Practices through Maximisation of Ranch Carrying Capacity, Including Introduction of Agro Technologies,” was organised by the Sandveld Association Field Day and hosted by Mr Gokatweng ‘Coach’ Tshekiso. In his address, Minister Molao commended the efforts of the Sandveld Ranchers Association for their dedication to commercialising the livestock sector. He highlighted the government’s commitment to complementing these efforts through the various programmes aimed at improving agricultural production and market compliance. He outlined several government initiatives, including Temo Letlotlo programme and the newly launched Thuo Letlotlo programme, designed to support sustainable farming practices and enhance market participation. He emphasised the need for ranchers to utilise these programmes effectively to maximise their benefits. Addressing concerns about ranch carrying capacity and stocking rates, Minister Molao stressed the importance of periodic range assessments and the implementation of robust strategies to combat the effects of climate change. He highlighted the government’s focus on digitisation in livestock management, citing the prioritisation of the Lobu Small Stock Farm as a pioneer in Information Communication Technology (ICT) adoption. Furthermore, Minister Molao discussed the Beef Cluster Initiative, aimed at restoring the livestock sector as a key economic pillar. He outlined achievements to date, including capacity building and the promotion of Botswana Grassfed beef.
The Minister also addressed challenges such as droughts and veld fires, emphasising the government’s commitment to providing relief measures and assistance to affected farmers. He highlighted ongoing efforts to prevent and control diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), reaffirming Botswana’s status as an FMDfree zone.
Minister Molao expressed gratitude to attendees and encouraged active participation in the event’s discussions and practical activities. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the livestock sector’s transformation into a sustainable, and vibrant industry.
