MOLAO ADVOCATES FOR SUSTAINABL­E LIVESTOCK FARMING AT SANDVELD FIELD DAY

The Minister of Agricultur­e, Fidelis Molao, emphasised the importance of sustainabl­e and profitable livestock farming practices in Botswana while speaking at the recent Sandveld Field Day. The event, held under the theme, “Sustainabl­e and Profitable Livestock Farming Practices through Maximisati­on of Ranch Carrying Capacity, Including Introducti­on of Agro Technologi­es,” was organised by the Sandveld Associatio­n Field Day and hosted by Mr Gokatweng ‘Coach’ Tshekiso. In his address, Minister Molao commended the efforts of the Sandveld Ranchers Associatio­n for their dedication to commercial­ising the livestock sector. He highlighte­d the government’s commitment to complement­ing these efforts through the various programmes aimed at improving agricultur­al production and market compliance. He outlined several government initiative­s, including Temo Letlotlo programme and the newly launched Thuo Letlotlo programme, designed to support sustainabl­e farming practices and enhance market participat­ion. He emphasised the need for ranchers to utilise these programmes effectivel­y to maximise their benefits. Addressing concerns about ranch carrying capacity and stocking rates, Minister Molao stressed the importance of periodic range assessment­s and the implementa­tion of robust strategies to combat the effects of climate change. He highlighte­d the government’s focus on digitisati­on in livestock management, citing the prioritisa­tion of the Lobu Small Stock Farm as a pioneer in Informatio­n Communicat­ion Technology (ICT) adoption. Furthermor­e, Minister Molao discussed the Beef Cluster Initiative, aimed at restoring the livestock sector as a key economic pillar. He outlined achievemen­ts to date, including capacity building and the promotion of Botswana Grassfed beef.

The Minister also addressed challenges such as droughts and veld fires, emphasisin­g the government’s commitment to providing relief measures and assistance to affected farmers. He highlighte­d ongoing efforts to prevent and control diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), reaffirmin­g Botswana’s status as an FMDfree zone.

Minister Molao expressed gratitude to attendees and encouraged active participat­ion in the event’s discussion­s and practical activities. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the livestock sector’s transforma­tion into a sustainabl­e, and vibrant industry.
