Reckless driver kills schoolboy in Kanye

- BY NEO KOLANTSHO

An 18- year-old Seepapitso Senior Secondary School student died this past Monday after being knocked down by a reckless 25- year- old driver in Kanye.

Head of Traffic at Kanye Police, Ernest Sesinyi said the student was rushed to the nearest hospital in the village and later transferred to Princess Marina Hospital where he died.

He said the driver escaped unharmed. “Investigations on the matter are still ongoing and the suspect is currently in police custody. We are yet to charge him. I will not want to reveal much,” he said.

Sesinyi said they have established that the 25-year-old man is not the owner of the car. Instead, the owner of the car had taken it to a garage for routine maintenance when it was then taken out on a drive that would later turn fatal.

Meanwhile, Kanye villagers have reacted with disgust at the incident. According to eye witnesses, the driver was driving at a high speed and lost control of the vehicle. They say the student was nowhere near the road when the car hit him. Some even allege that the man was drunk and appeared sleepy and had a strong beer odour.

In a separate incident, Sesinyi revealed that a 26-year-old man of Lotlhakane East had killed his sister recently when the car he was driving overturned along the Kanye Lobatse road.

“This was also a result of careless driving and not obeying road traffic signs. We urge the public to exercise patience when on the road,” Sesinyi said.
