And the world focuses on COVID-19, there is a desperate effort underway by the Bengaliwalla’s to raise awareness about lesser-known disorders like one their daughter suffers from. For years now, their mission has been to advocate for children everywhere like her who are fighting for their lives.

And on Sunday Feb 28, the Bengaliwalla continued their push for education and awareness raising as a part of ‘Rare Disease Day.’ “’Show Your Stripes,’ is a call to action for people to literally and figuratively “show their stripes” in support of rare diseases. The zebra is the official symbol of rare diseases and is noted for its black and white stripes, which are central to its uniqueness.

Everyone has his/her own stripes, those characteristics that make each individual distinct. While each of the more than 7,000 rare diseases across the world are unique, there are many commonalities that unite the rare disease community,”Batul explained. “It’s so important for us to continue to educate because Jamila is one out of many other kids and adults that have rare disease in this country. There are many untold stories and struggles which need to be heard. Our medical facility needs more exposure and our medical teams helping at the clinics, hospitals need more education on rare diseases.

“I wish and hope that every medical outlet can have posters speaking about rare disease as a whole too, just the way breast cancer, cancer, HIV, stroke etc have been given importance, rare diseases which are one of a kind also need preference. Adding, “If we can raise enough awareness about these diseases perhaps we can be in in position to pool resources and make an impact on our children’s lives,” she said.

The Bengaliwallas’will host a bake Sale in March and are planning a Battens awareness walk on battens disease day in June (COVID 19 protocols in place). The family is also selling Jamila’s journey merchandise. The fundraising campaigns and donations help the family to cover the healthcare expenses not covered by medical insurance or government, such as equipment and therapy, travel, adjustments at home and respite care. The sassy Amantle Brown has made a lovely weekend for her fans, this past weekend as she dropped one banging pop single dubbed, ‘Kgantele’. She features M.O.D of MMP Family in this precious track, that translates to ‘Later ’ in English. Just as it was released on the last days of the month of love, the song is all about love. “I feel like I am never having proper relationships, and the best way I can only have proper relationships, is when I imagine them, hence this song. People who love each other always want to be together, and the moment they part they already call or text each other and calculate meeting once again later,” she said. She further told Vibe that, ‘Kgantele’ is more like a spiritual song to her. “Now and then people use the word ‘later’, and so I thought I should put this into a song just to embrace the later moment, when someone anticipates something good,” she added.

A lyric video was released on Saturday morning, and just within an hour it had already reached 10 000 people, according to Amantle Brown. She expressed appreciation over the positive feedback that she is receiving. “It is a record for me, to have reached 10 000 people online just within an hour, so I am grateful to my fans for sharing my song,” she said. She also appreciated the spirit of unity, as she notes that comedians and social media influencers also came all out to support her single and share it on their social media platforms. These she says include creatives such as; Pompi a.k.a Sebetsa and Bra Tom, Penene Ponono, Maatla Ephraim Basha, Troy April, BJB and Berry Heart. “They really helped for this song to reach out to the masses so quickly, and to me, this shows that unity can really be amazing and turn out something into gold,” she said.

This is her first official single release in 2021, and she assured her fans that she is back with a bang, as she has found herself in the music realm. She regards herself as a ‘soul sister’ and emphasises that her music career motto is to write timeless songs that speak to the listener’s heart.
