BVF GRANT BALANCE SWALLOWED

...as BNSC takes strict measures to save money amid the COVID 19 pandemic

Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF)’s efforts to have four beach volleyball tournaments and one indoor competition have recently been jeopardized due to the reprioritization of funding in government; the events were solely banking on BVF tapping into their administration funds to finance the five tournaments.

The financial situation which Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) and the government find themselves in means there has to be strict measures in place to save money. The BVF has therefore lost part of their grant which was set aside for the five tournaments. Consequently the BNSC as a government funded entity will not receive the balance of its grant in the current financial (2020/21) year except for costs related to unavoidable activities. As a result, there has been a spillover effect to the BNSC subordinates which means national sport associations with positive balances of their grants won’t be allowed to carry those funds forward to the 2021/22 financial year. In addition the BNSC won’t be able to honour any financial request from federations. “Our plans have been frustrated without an inch of consultation. We deliberately did not spend much from our 2020/21 allocation. We were given P1.4 million and we used P200000. The remainder was to cover tournaments, courses, beach volleyball and administration.

All these areas have been affected so our balance is gone and there is no money to spend therefore the idea of having tournaments is dead,” said BVF Vice president-Administration, Ndibo Lebala in an interview with Sun Sport.
