POTHOLE DEATH Woman dies in an accident involving family of three
Police in Sehithwa are investigating a case in which a 39-year-old woman died after the car she was travelling in lost control. According to Sehithwa Police Station Commander, Nshaka Mabophiwa the accident occurred between Sehithwa and Tsau villages, 135km away from Maun.
Mabophiwa noted that they received a report on Saturday around 4pm from members of the public that there had been a road traffic accident that occurred on that road.
Mabophiwa said the deceased was with her 37-year-old sister and her 27-year-old nephew, who was the driver of the four-wheel Hilux.
The Police said the family gave the deceased a ride in Tsau with the intention of dropping her off in Maun.
The deceased’s sister and nephew were from the farm in Nokaneng where they had gone to fetch watermelons and maize that had filled up the bakkie.
Mabophiwa indicated that the car lost control after it hit a pothole and veered off the road and overturned. The victims were rushed to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital where the 39-year-old woman was certified dead.
The police chief said the deceased’s sister was taken to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital for further medical assistance as she experienced severe injuries as well as internal bleeding. The deceased’s nephew sustained minor injuries and is in Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital.
A distraught distant relative of the deceased had earlier narrated to The Midweek Sun, how the woman’s life may have been saved had she not insisted on waiting for her sister and nephew. The two had allegedly gone to Tsau for a funeral when the deceased later said she was not feeling well and wanted to go back home. The relative who was with her then asked that they go wait by the roadside to hitch hike back home, but she refused, saying she would rather wait for her relatives who were coming from Nokaneng in a Toyota Hilux.
“This is the first fatal accident on that road since January 2021”, Mabophiwa said, urging drivers to always be vigilant on the Sehithwa– Shakawe road which has several potholes.
