The life of Motshidisi Moesi, 66, changed forever in 2009 when without warning, she fell to the ground while out to fetch water from a stand pipe at New Stance in Francistown. A sudden swelling of her right leg after she had fallen forced those close to her at the time to rush her to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital where they had hoped she would find restorative medical assistance, but that was never to be.

Mma Moesi would never be able to walk on her own again, and had to depend on her tenants to assist her with house chores as well as often carrying her into her car whenever she needed to go for medical check-up.

“Ever since that day in 2009, I have not been able to walk without using a walking stick to move around. In January 2020, things got worse as my joints became more painful, forcing me to abandon the walking stick to just sit in the house as it was painful and tough for me to continue walking,” Moesi said. Since then, she has remained indoors, not able to leave the house except only when she had to go seek medical attention. After learning of her ordeal, the We Care Trust in partnership with Plus Size women responded to her plight and donated a wheelchair this past Monday. Chairman of We Care Trust Modiri Lucas said they learnt of Moesi’s need for a wheelchair way back in January last year, and were told it was difficult for her to do house chores as she could not move around. Moesi shed tears of joy before citing that with the wheelchair, she would now be able to take herself to the nearby clinic without paying fares for a special taxi, which was expensive for her. She said having to stay alone in the house without doing much had been a great challenge. Meanwhile, Chairperson of the the plus size women, popularly known as Queen Voluptuous, Kemelo Mozila said they intend to assess the situation and ultimately adopt Moesi to be considered for assistance on a monthly basis. According to Mozila, every month they donate food hampers and clothing to adopted families including to the girl child. Chairperson of the Self-Help Housing Agency Committee at the Francistown City Council Jerssy Tumedi encouraged the Ward Development Committee to help pave Moesi’s yard to enable her to use the wheelchair freely without any hindrance from the uneven surface.
