ASS AFFAIR: Deaths from donkey cart accidents worry the police
There have been 15 road accidents involving donkey carts so far this year, with two fatalities.
Director of Traffic, Senior Assistant Commissioner Katlholo Mosimanegape said that in 2020, there were 38 accidents with no fatalities while 50 were recorded in 2019, with three fatalities.
Mosimanegape said that although the percentage accounted for by road accidents involving donkey carts appear insignificant on national roads, the situation calls for prompt action lest it escalates into a wider death trap. According to him, donkey carts are mostly not in good shape thus rendering their compliance with certain road traffic regulations compromised. “Some do not have retro-reflectors which make them visible at night. Some span more than two donkeys abreast thus posing danger to other road users in the event that they encroach upon tarred roads,” Mosimanegape said.
