BOTSHELO SEGOKGO PUBLISHES BOOK ON GOVERNMENTS AND PANDEMIC

- BY SUN REPORTER

Botshelo Segokgo has published a book titled My Belly or to Live, which explores the burdens that governments have when unforeseen circumstances arises. He told Vibe that the book focuses on the challenges that governments undergo when a pandemic happens, with reference to the Covid19 pandemic that has gripped the country and the whole world.

“It is known that when there is a pandemic, leaders have to choose the lives of people or the economy of the country.

The aftermath of every disease affects everyone, directly or indirectly. When HIV/AIDS struck Botswana, it did so severely… but the leaders chose the lives of people; controlling the disease was a priority. So basically, the book explores the decision of protection against the risk of the disease occurring, which is more costly than the disease itself,” he said.

He pointed out that the question that often arises is, what choice should leaders make? He noted that every great leader cares for his people, and sometimes this care leads to uncommon decisions. “It is the uncommon decisions that break and shatter norms of culture crimes, corruption and save many lives because at the end of the day, the question most leaders would have been: do we focus on saving lives or saving and sustaining the economy?”

Segokgo, who hails from Moshupa, developed passion for writing, poetry, drama, singing and edutainment projects from a young age. The young, who is a pre-primary teacher, said he wants his arts to bring guidance to children so that they don’t go wayward.

A product of the Target 200, 000 education initiative, the 26-year-old said the opportunity to complete his tertiary education motivated him to write books and use his writing skills and insight to motivate students. He explained that he had turned over a new leaf, after going through a wild phase where he was disobedient, ill-mannered and an alcoholic.

“I almost became a bad person in society. The things I did let to many regrets but luckily, I decided to change my life for the better.”
