CHARMA GAL AND NONO SPREAD LOVE THROUGH SONG

Encourage women to love and support one another

- BY IRENE SHONE

ono Siile and Charma Gal enNcourage women to embrace one another through their new Jazz tune titled Ko Kgotleng.

This is one historic collaboration, in the country where the renowned Charma Gal has been featured by a local female artist. Nono recently told Vibe that she has observed this for a long time, and finally decided to do something about it, to uplift local talent. “Ko Kgotleng’ is a fun jazz track that encourages women to have their own exceptional gatherings to promote one another. I have observed with particular focus that Charma Gal has only featured men in Botswana and so I wanted to change this. She is one of the most established female artists recognised in Botswana, and I thought as other female artistes locally, we can learn something from her and I am glad that she didn’t turn me down when I asked her to do collaboration with me on my new single,” she said.

Nono is of the view that women should be each other’s best keeper instead of always trying to mock one another and pull each other down. She pointed out that a lot of the time, women don’t seem to get along and this is not right. She explained the song urges women to notice the strength in one another and work together instead of competing and bringing each other down. “Most of the time, women would rather talk behind one another’s back when they notice that another is doing well and making it in life. The song urges them to cherish one another and remember that what they do today, is what would be done by the next generations of women, so they need to attract positivity into their lives. There is nothing wrong with appreciating another person’s successes, asking how they did it and learning from them,” she said.

Charma Gal told Vibe that she is happy to have worked with Nono as a first lady she has ever featured in Botswana’s music industry. “It is true, women like competition and enjoy to judge one another based on petty issues, so through this song, ‘Ko kgotleng’ we try to address these unfortunate situations and encourage women to fix each other’s crown,” she said. She said one of the reasons she has worked a lot with men rather than women is that the former are easier to work with. She however said that things were refreshingly different with Nono, as she is down-toearth and professions. “I was very pleased to collaborate with her. Working with her was amazing,” she said.

The two singers said they hope to continue working together to bring more informative songs, using their talented voices, to build people through song. Nono said she is ready to collaborate with any other female artist who needs to do a project with her. “I believe that it is high time Botswana ladies musicians show the world what they can do together,” she said. The music video to the song is expected to be released soon.
