Kazungula Marathon moves to early 2022
The much anticipated date for the Kazungula Bridge Marathon was recently unveiled and the event which is now slated for February 26 2022, in the Kasane and Kazungula areas, is set to cost a fortune.
The event was initially billed for the 2nd of October this year but was postponed due to challenges of battling the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking to Sun Sport this week, the Kazungula Bridge Marathon founder and Chief Executive Officer of Obert Fitness, Obert Morgan, said this massive event is set to cost organizers, P3.5 million to put everything in place for a successful spectacle.
“It is a big event, it has generated interest from government and the business community. This has also attracted the global audience and this means preparations for an event of this magnitude grows higher than initially anticipated, with at least P3.5 million needed for us to deliver a successful event. Obert Fitness has been funding some of the activities towards preparing for this event,” Morgan revealed.
The marathon, which has been sanctioned by Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) has four categories, which are: 42.2 km, 21.1 Km, 10 km fun run, and 5 km. The marathon has also been approved by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) who will see the event used to qualify athletes for major global half marathon events.
“We have done all necessary requirements to align with the IAAF, and this event will see athletes stand an opportunity to qualify for major events, with China international athletics half marathon set to be one of the events which will be fed by Kazungula Bridge Marathon,” the founder of the event explained.
He further stated that the postponement of the event was informed by the fact that the vaccine rollout was still ongoing and they want to allow the government to vaccinate as many people as possible, which will allow a good number of spectators and participants at the event next year.
Morgan, during the launch of the event back in July, said they are aiming to diversify the country’s economy through sports.
Together with his team, Morgan believes that, looking at the magnitude of the event and the people they have in the committee, which include
