King David: Touching and transforming lives through music

- KELETSO THOBEGA

King David is a fountain of admirable talent and his healing voice is a common feature online, where some people often post clips of his moving performances on social media.

The gregarious lad is a soft-spoken and calm man, but when he sings, he takes on a marvelous animated personality as he soothes with his powerful voice. The all-round creative recently told Vibe that he is currently working on a new album with eight songs, which is partly recorded at Touch Records.

The singer, who is now an ordained pastor, shared that he recently completed bible school, and he is more fired up than ever to spread the word of God. When he started out in the entertainment industry, he did comedy, to get people’s attention, he said. He worked with the likes of Maatla Ephraim, Troy April and Pompi, among others.

He shared that he met Vee Mampeezy by chance at church while they were doing a sound check for a show.

“Vee Mampeezy and I met at Apostle Tshekane’s church...

I am a sound engineer by profession, and I had been asked to test sound. As you know, sometimes we sing to test sound and when I sang, Vee Mampeezy was charmed and told me that he loved my voice. He asked that we work together and I agreed because of his popularity - I knew that he would introduce me to a wider fan base. The thing is, one can have talent but without people knowing; I wanted people to know about my talent. I have always been rooted in Christianity and I had reservations about working with Vee Mampeezy because he performs in bars and clubs and so forth, but after thinking about it, I realised that Vee could be sent to help me to unlock my calling. Vee Mampeezy is not perfect but I like that he goes all in when it comes to God. I have continued to grow spiritually over the years, and he has also told me a few commendable lessons on faith and God. For example, people always criticise how Vee Mampeezy perform in bars and clubs, but why should we preach the word in church only? The pulpit is bigger than the church - we have many opportunities to spread the word. What we need to do, is go out there and touch the lives of people. The devil is currently fighting to steal souls and is targeting young people, which is why I minister and sing where they are. We are living in times when the devil is trying to bring us down, but I encourage us to sine in the dark. God made me and Vee Mampeezy, meet so that we could build a fan base... he made me influential because he is a big brand, and it has been blessing to be associated with him. Many of my friends are not Christian because I find that some Christians tend to ride on a high horse and condemn and judge other people instead of using themselves as a living example of Godly love. I believe in Christianity that demonstrates love and we should strive to love even those we feel are unlovable or unworthy because we are all made in the image of God.”

King David said that he uses his own story to encourage other people in life.

“I first came to Gaborone from Ramotswa after leaving home to hustle. I told myself that I would be self-reliant because I did not want to depend on my parents. I wanted to rely on my talent and stand on my own two feet. I have been through a lot - I have struggled. There was a time when I was so broke that I would sleep at a filling station. My opportunities were limited because I completed Form five but I didn’t pass well because I had suffered a broken spinal cord following an accident. However, I kept the voice and continued working hard and slowly but surely, my life transformed for the better. So I am saying, if God can do it to me... then he can do it for you too. I know for sure that God can transform one’s life. God can take you from grass to grace!”

“I want to encourage lost souls to go back to Christ... These “lost souls” are God’s sheep. It takes grace to touch people’s lives. We are all people of God... We might be of different denominations but we all serve one God - the Kingdom of God. We should be united in peace, love and unity,” he said.

King David has also worked with Matla Ephraim, Toy April and Pompi.

The singer, who worships at Abandon City Church in Gaborone, said he is happy with how his life is panning out, particularly as he is under the guidance of a phenomenal man of God, Thuso Molefe. He said he likes that he doesn’t preach miracles but encourages people to be practical if they want to change their lives. “His teachings are premised on the fact that we are all responsible for our actions. We should not depend on miracles but you have to build your own miracle. He teaches us to face life the way it is.
