NO FREE LUNCH: Kanye Nursing College sends learners packing

- BY NEO KOLANTSHO

Kanye Seventh-Day Adventist College of Nursing has sent students home for failure to pay tuition fees.

Information gathered by The Midweek Sun shows that when the school opened for the second semester last month, they were given letters that reminded them that failure to pay first semester fees will result in students being barred from proceeding to the second semester. The affected students said that the agreement with the school was that they pay P4 200 per semester or a total of about P 11 000 annually (two semesters) when they include uniform and equipment fees.

But now the school management has announced revised prices of P22 000 per semester. In a year, they are expected to fork out around P37 000. “There has been no communication about the increase. This is unfair to most of us. Imagine that on top of that there is accommodation and transport to and from the school. How will we manage?” the devastated students asked. They are pleading with the management to be lenient because many will not be able to pay the money.

At press time, the owners of the school were said to be outside the country and could not make an official comment. However, an official at the college said that those complaining do not want to pay but continue coming to class. “They have not paid even a single thebe. They cry of increased prices but even the old prices, they have not paid anything. We understand that many are unable to pay a lump sum but we have suggested that they at least pay the minimum.“Admissions are clear on the payments of tuition fees. No one can proceed to the next level without paying the outstanding dues. “Those who genuinely try to pay, we have allowed that they pay the P4 200 for now but others just want to be here for free.

There are expenses to be paid including lecturers’ salaries. We cannot afford to have students learning here for free.”
