RELEGATION SURVIVAL INTENSIFIES
The battle for survival in the Botswana Football League (BFL) continues as BR Highlanders will be in combat against their rivals in the relegation zone Prisons XI at the Serowe Sports Complex this afternoon (Wednesday).
Local football supporters are to be treated to a layered and intense relegation battle with Highlanders and Prisons in serious trouble of being relegated to the lower tier first division. However, Highlanders are in the most precarious position having occupied the last place for most of the season. This will be the most desperate battle between two direct competitors, Prisons are six points away from their rivals Higlanders, after 20 games the visitors have accumulated 17 points and are sitting over the edge in position 12, while Highlanders are bottom of the table. There are reasons for optimism all round in both teams. Highlanders will use the fact that Prisons have a poor defensive record having conceded 47 goals all season. Although Highlanders themselves have conceded 42, they will be confident they can break the defensive line of the visitors. On the flipside, Prisons have a better record in front of goal, they have so far scored 20 goals while their opponents have
only managed to score 14.
After a turbulent season which has included the departure of coach Blessing Moyo, Highlanders look more determined to survive the drop than ever before while Prisons have been blowing more cold that hot too often.
The other club in the mix of the relegation battle is Gilport lions, who are playing against Masitaoka at VTM stadium also this afternoon. For Gilport Lions, the drop would be potentially ruinous considering the time they spent to build the team and remain in the top tier. The contest in the relegation battle has swayed one way and the other, with Notwane, Mogoditshane Fighters, Extension Gunners and Gilport Lions all embroiled in an almighty scrap to stay in the League, all the teams will have to be at the best of their performances if they need to survive relegation.
