SELENIUM CAN IMPROVE YOUR MOOD

- BY HOWARD ARMISTEAD

Everyone wants to be happy in life. The questions is, how to achieve that happiness. The dictionary defines happiness as “The state or quality of being happy; the pleasurable experience that springs from possession of good or the gratification of desires; enjoyment; blessedness.”

Obviously, happiness is the opposite of sadness or depression. Buddhist philosophy suggests that desire or wanting things is what makes a person unhappy, so transcending that desire – not desiring – makes a person less unhappy. Many things can contribute to making a person happy – children, family, lovers, money, success, religion. Those same things sometimes make us unhappy, stressed or frustrated as well. In the end, no one else or nothing else in life can make you perfectly happy. Only you can make yourself a happy person because happiness comes from within.

Only your own soul or spirit determines how happy you are in life. However good health and a healthy immune system do contribute to being a happier person. And having less stress in life also helps.

The nutritional supplement selenium reduces stress in the body at the cellular level. That can help reduce headaches and the feeling that you are “stressed out”.

That is also one way selenium helps to reduce cancer. Selenium is the essential element of the anti-oxidant system that helps keep every cell in the body clean and detoxified.

Because selenium is such a strong antioxidant it also acts as an anti-inflammatory reducing tension, headaches and even minor aches and pains. Selenium tablets not only reduce stress at the cellular level, they can also reduce the stress you feel in daily life – at least to some extent.

Scientists have studied almost all aspects of medicine, physiology and psychology. According to the Lancet medical journal, they have determined that working through the immune system, selenium supplements help reduce not only stress but also depression, anxiety or worrying, hostility or anger, and confusion. In fact you can think of selenium as brain food. The brain has a special need for selenium and even when selenium levels in the body run low the brain conserves it and maintains its supply of selenium.

That is because the brain needs selenium to perform properly. Selenium affects many aspects of brain function including memory, concentration and mood.
