Fashion designer with big dreams

- BY IRENE SHONE

A local fashion designer, Boikhutso Molefe says Botswana has made significant strides in the fashion industry and needs to be recognised internationally.

Molefe, a Gaborone-Block 3 based fashion designer believes that in order for one to be a perfect fashion designer, they have to do it from the heart. She is one of the amazing fashion designers who grew up surrounded by family members within the same industry. She grew up watching especially her cousin turning fabrics into lovely outfits, and that was the time she knew deep down that she wants to be a fashion designer. She joined the industry officially in 2017 and never looked back. “I also studied Home Economics at school, and Fashion and Fabrics was one of the subjects that I excelled in. This gave me the courage to mould my dream. I also went to Girl Guide school to further my fashion designing skills,” she says, emphasising that she also worked with Starlight Fashions where she learnt a lot about fashion. She does not regard herself as an ordinary designer but a designer of note, as she strives for outstanding results at all times. Instead of limiting herself to one certain fashion style, Molefe goes across board to ensure that both men and women look good at different occasions. She believes that fashion knows no boundaries and both men and women deserve looking good in well designed outfits. She tells Vibe that her designs include; casual wear, corporate wear, wedding attires and classy wear, depending on what a client is looking for. “I do not want to limit fashion or limit myself as a fashion designer. That is why I always think outside the box to give my work that touch of elegance,” she says. She has exhibited some of her work at the Consumer Fair, where she has won position one. For now, she looks forward to attend this year’s President’s competition in the category of Fashion. Her work includes designing outfits for music groups. It always humbles her to see the choirs on television adorned in her work. This past weekend, she dressed up Councillor of Block 3, Motamma Horatius and her husband in what a lot dubbed a daring matching outfit. She is glad that she always gets positive feedback and says she looks forward to having her own label and opening a clothing shop one day as well as trading internationally.
