THE TOY HAIR STORY!

Enterprising hair stylist makes strides in style stakes

- SUN REPORTER

Mention the name ‘Toy’ in the hair business and most people will immediately know who you are talking about because the young lady behind Toy’s Hair Salon in Gaborone,is talented when it comes to hairstyling. She is not only skilled in plaiting and hairstyling but is also a happy free spirit who makes her clients feel at ease and makes them beautiful and happy. Her aura and energy are magnetic, and that is the first thing that attracts people to her, in addition to her gregarious personality. But it is her styling skills that put the biggest smile on the faces of her clients.

Toy has been in the hair business for a little over a decade. She toldVibe that she started off doing hair as a young student, doing nails and later branching into plaiting and styling. While she was driven by a need to supplement her income, she also had great passion for hair styling.

“I believe that the hair is a woman’s crowning glory and that hair deserves great care to grow rich and healthy. This is a specialised field that is at the core of

the beauty industry,” she said.Toy graduated from teriary a few years ago,and she said the education had come in handy in helping her to run her business because entrepreneurship has its ups and downs. It also brings her joy to economically empower other people as she works with a group of equally passionate young Batswana.

She also noted that as a young person herself, she likes fashion and trends, and often comes up with funky and stylish hair styles that complement a style conscious person. She said she is always looking at trends to incorporate into her hairstyling, and she does market research to keep updated on what people want out there.

“It is important to be innovative and always improving in this field because trends come and go. For example, last year ‘stropo’ was trending but not as much as before; some people like stylish buns and puff gels; while others want cornrows and braids. Everyone has their own preference and taste.” She said she always looks at a client first to figure out what would suite them, and also consider the state of their hair. In between styling, she sometimes shares hair care tips, not only because she has been blessed with rich hair herself, but also because she possesses a wealth of experience and knowledge on hair care and treatment.
