UNIQUE PHOTOSHOOT TO CELEBRATE PEOPLE WITH VITILIGO

- BY IRENE SHONE

Vitiligo skin condition still needs awareness, in order for the victims to live freely in the society without feeling discriminated, hence the upcoming Vitiligo Awareness series photoshoot set for people living with vitiligo.

Mompoloki ‘Lady’ Seloka better known as

Vitiligo Lady says that many people still stigmatize people with Vitiligo, and some believe it is contagious. She tells Sun Health that, people with vitiligo just live a normal life like anyone else, except for the fact that they have developed that different skin. “Vitiligo can affect anyone, both the young and the old and most people with it, were not born with it,” she explains.

She has thus decided to organize a photoshoot session for people with vitiligo, as a way of helping them to accept their condition and know that they are still beautiful in their skin. She is confident that this would help create awareness. Seloka further explains that this is also in preparation for the annual vitiligo commemoration day which is on June 25th. She says for those who wish to book for this photoshoot series may do so until Thursday this week at a booked studio in Maun. She says the theme of the photoshoot is, ‘Vitiligo is our light not our curse’, reiterating that this could create awareness as the photos would be shared even on social media platforms to inform people about Vitiligo.

“Having managed to come out and speak about my condition, I felt that there could be so many stories about Vitiligo out there that need to be told. I am certain that this would build confidence in people living with Vitiligo and so this photoshoot, with interviews would definitely help to raise more awareness,” says Seloka.

So far, People are already responding very well regarding her initiative, and she plans to have the event as an annual event going forward. “I have noticed that, there is a lot of stigma in Botswana regarding; Vitiligo and its victims, so this fight can only be fought by us the ambassadors of vitiligo and albinism,” adds Seloka.
