Walk against human trafficking and killings

- BY IRENE SHONE

United Pan Africanist Movement (UPAM) Botswana will this weekend embark on a sensitisation walk dubbed, ‘A March Against Human Trafficking and Related Killings.’

President of the United Pan Africanist Botswana Organisation, Naomi Sewela, says the objective of the walk is to raise awareness and public empowerment against human trafficking, as Botswana has been experiencing related issues.

“Our nation is currently being caroused with related killings and there is no voice to stand in the gap, so as a unifying network we will be marching against such to clear out negativity,” she said. Sewela said that a number of these related cases have been reported this year and that they want society to stand against them.

UPAM holds a strong opinion on Human Rights Advocacy, women and youth empowerment, pushing for sustainable economic development and diversification, and the unity of Africa. The Non-governmental Organisation was established in 2020, while the Botswana chapter was successfully registered in April 2022.

Sewela said that UPAM believes in the neutrality of actions, transparency of intentions, and independence of goals.

“Our mission is to secure civil and political rights for African people, promote friendly relations among African people, and encourage African people in education, industrialisation and entrepreneurship,” she said.

UPAM Botswana Chapter recently held a leadership seminar in which members of the organisation were trained on leadership and professional competence skills.

“With this walk, we try to get the society to be informed that there are Human Trafficking and Related Killings, but there has been silence on the topic,” she said, adding that everyone has a right to life, and those found violating this right should be brought to justice.
