CELEBRATING WOMEN!

Artist Motshedi pays homage to African women

- BY KELETSO THOBEGA

Visual artist Michelle Motshedi has released a series of paintings and sketches aimed at celebrating African women and the significant role

that they play in society.

She told Vibe that the works celebrate the essence of women, and why they should be treated equally without any bias or prejudice.

She noted that whether women choose to be mothers, single, wives,

career women or pop stars - it is their choice and through these works, she depicts how women can be who and what they want to be.

The different artworks celebrate the diversity of women, and their intellectual and spiritual depth and

substance.

“Women have always been suppressed by some kind of forces (political and cultural) that has restricted their choices and freedom for a long time.”

“But the world is changing, people evolving and women are rising up to occupy spaces based on personal choices. They are also taking steps to ensure they have the means, choice and freedom to speak and do whatever they want, and live freely on their own terms.”
