Impoverished Tlhale School receives computers
Leading cement manufacturing entity, PPC Botswana has donated 12 desktop computers, with installed software and workstations valued at P50 000 to Tlhale Primary School in the Gumare region.
PPC Botswana Head of Business Tuelo Botlhole said that education is one of the key focus areas of the organisation. “We are pleased to be able to meet an immediate and practical need as some of the students will be preparing for their final exams. Education is important and we want to ensure that students have the required learning tools.
“Education has a direct impact on life expectancy and overall health. It’s also a powerful agent of change that can lift generations out of poverty,” he said.
Botlhole said the 12 computers will improve the performance of students and help them to engage better with their school work and experience a better quality of life.
“It’s believed that computers in education completely enhance students’ mathematical knowledge, critical thinking, and improve scores, besides
helping with problem-solving,” he said. This development happened after Tlhale primary school, which has 350 students experienced a shortage of classrooms, shortage of water supplies, and lack of academic resources, the school head Gaone Ebineng said.
Upon receiving the computers and workstations, Tlhale Primary School students, teachers, and residents expressed their gratitude, stating that the development is a step in the right direction that will improve the learning conditions. She noted that the school is not performing according
to the standard and experiences a decline in PSLE results every year due to these challenges.
“We are striving to reach and exceed the target of 80 percent pass rate as Tlhale Primary School,” she added. In 2019, the school’s results declined from 73 percent to 58 percent in 2020.
Through its CSR programme, PPC Botswana has previously worked with schools such as Mogonono Primary School which received textbooks worth P100 000.
