THIS WEEK’S QUESTION: TO DIVORCE OR NOT TO DIVORCE?

- [opinions@ guardiansun.co.bw]

Divorce cases in Botswana are extremely high! So high many who aspire to tie the knot often find themselves wondering if they would be doing the right thing to plunge into the life of Holy matrimony. Yet these numbers could even be much higher if all the others looking to go their separate ways could be brave enough to come out and say, ‘I want a divorce.’ Information gathered over time from the police and the Gender Based Violence Prevention and Support Centre suggests that many individuals are trapped in dead marriages. Oftentimes, such people would rather sacrifice their happiness and peace for the sake of things they can still easily manage even outside their chronically hostile marriages. This matter was topical these past few days following the news that local music star Vee Mampeezy has filed for divorce. Court papers shared on social media platforms revealed that the diminutive celebrity and his wife Kagiso have been living a lie, just for the sake of saving face, when actually there had been no harmony in their house. There are even suggestions that the man has been staying at a hotel for about four weeks leading to the filing of the divorce, while the woman remained at their matrimonial house. Many asked why they have been forcing things, seeing that insults were now being hurled in a manner that could breed irreconcilable differences. But then one could ask: when is it the right time to ask for a divorce for couples that have been seen to live together in harmony? Should it wait until one raises a hand on the other? Consider a house where one actively avoids their partner; a house where there is no more trust and respect; a house where partners are staying together for the sake of the kids; where one partner yearns for single life or to date someone else; where one partner keeps beating up the other; where partners use separate rooms. Where there is recurring cheating. Why would couples still choose to stay together? It is true that even the most stable marriages will go through some rough patches, but there are things that should make a couple to straight-away go the divorce route, even with the knowledge that deciding if a marriage should end is a huge undertaking. What sought of things would make you leave the marriage without thinking twice? What are the things that would make you think twice before quitting? The pain of having to see the devastation on the kids? Lastly, is it true marriage is overrated? As usual, share your thoughts at:
