WHOEVER WAS NAMING THE DISTRICTS MUST RECONSIDER

-

A trending discussion this week has been the issue of the new districts after sub districts were upgraded to become fully independent entities while other districts were newly created. All along there has been only nine districts of Central, Kgatleng, South East, Ghanzi, Kgalagadi, Southern, Kweneng, North West and North East. With the upgrading of about 22 subdistricts, new names have emerged, according to what has been shared on the social media space recently. Unfortunately it looks like we are still trapped in the use of tribal territories to name districts, something we thought government would avoid after the many misgivings by the so-called minorities over the years. Magatwe a re among the proposed new districts go tlaa bo go na le bo Maun District, Tutume District, Serowe District, Boteti District, Letlhakeng District, Mabutsane District, Hukuntsi District, Kgatleng District, Bobirwa District, Kweneng District, Palapye District, South East District, Southern District and many others. Good move, if service delivery will improve – but why the inconsistent use of names where some areas have been named after their tribes while others by a major village in the enclave or by geographical reference? Lo a bo lo batla go tsosa dikgang akere? Can’t we, to avoid unnecessary issues, stick to some consistency that actually avoids tribal references? Why Bobirwa District and not Bobonong District or perhaps use a common feature within the district – like Boteti river used to name Boteti District? Tlogelang kgang tsa merafe please! Balete may as well demand gore ba bitswe Gamalete District!
