STANDARD CHARTERED AIDS FISH FARMERS
Standard Chartered Bank Botswana has devoted its human resource to empower the fish farmers at Oliphant’s Drift village through its global Employee Volunteering initiative.Standard Chartered Botswana Managing Director, Mpho Masupe said in line with sustainability agenda and environmental conservation, the bank chose the village because it has fishermen who make a living from fishing in Marico River. “We are committed to improving the livelihoods of the communities around us. Our promise, ‘Here for Good’ is not a suggestion but a lived experience that we strive to succeed in as we carry out our daily activities.” The bank and wider community came together to discuss, engage, bond and accelerate environmental sustainability initiatives. This year’s theme is ‘Follow the Sun’, which is a global employee volunteerism campaign under the banner of Accelerating Zero, focussing on the environment and sustainability. He said they would like to take the opportunity to engage and learn about various techniques used when fishing. “The main objective will be on how the angling of fish can impact the environment, sustain communities, and improve livelihoods and best sustainable practices for fishing.” Masupe also pointed out that the Bank exists to drive
prosperity and commerce through its unique diversity. “We do this whilst celebrating and creating a space for our diversity and inclusion agenda to take centre stage in all of our efforts.” For his remarks, assistant minister of Local Government and Rural Development and Member of Parliament for Mochudi East, Mabuse Pule said the activities provided an opportunity for introspection
and dialogue on techniques and habits that are less detrimental to the environment and can be sustainable. “We were very pleased when the bank identified the fishing or angling industry in Dinokeng and directed their efforts towards its improvement. It is our sincere hope that now that you have seen the potential of the area, you will come to our aid when we reach out to you.”
