300 DIE IN ROAD MISHAPS
Bobirwa under heavy police surveillance
Botswana has registered 300 road traffic fatalities since the beginning of the year.
Speaking at the launch of the 60 Days of Action on Crime and Road Safety in Bobonong on Tuesday, Acting Commissioner of Police Phemelo Ramakorwane said the figure suggested an uncomfortable increase of 6.5 percent compared to last year.
Ramakorwane shared that the youth remain the most road safety challenged category of road users.
He said they decided to launch the 60 days of action on crime in Bobonong because they recently succeeded in curbing
stock theft and cattle rustling in Bobirwa.
Officer Commanding No 10 District Meshack Pulenyane told The Midweek Sun a week ago that Mmadinare, which is found in the Bobirwa area has turned into a slaughterhouse.
People are killed week in and out. Blood he said, is shed even over petty issues.
“We have targets during the 60 days of action which include monitoring and searching for drugs. Air patrol on major roads and mounting speed relays,” Ramakorwane said.
They will also be searching for roadworthiness and licences as well as ensuring that liquor outlets close and open at stipulated times.
