THE AFRICAN MAP, HARE, AK-47 AND CROCODILE IN FNB LOGO

-

The debate about the recently launched FNB logo continues to rage on to date, with some praising the transformation as modern and communicating while others, especially in South Africa, feel the bank lost the plot. Kana the bank replaced foreign-owned Barclays Bank in South Africa in the 1980s, after the latter was sold to some South African individuals and entities who then rebranded it as the country’s first national bank. Gatwe the original logo of 1986 had a political significance with the acacia tree that had hidden elements such as the AK-47, the map of Africa, a rabbit representing a political party of the time, and a crocodile. A closer look at the original logo clearly shows these features. Now some old-school South Africans feel the new logo has defaced that significance that made them proud during the apartheid era, and they say bone all they see is a WiFi signal or an electrical pylon. Ba re they want their symbols of the struggle back and do not care about that modern times design narrative.
