Des performances brillantes! That is what one would say in French to praise the amazing set by Rhumba star Kofi Olomide, who graced the National Stadium in Gaborone on Saturday as a headline act for Charma Gal’s Kgosi ya Mosadi concert.

The Congolese rhumba & soukas singer last performed in Botswana in 2005, and 17 years later he returned for a show-stopping concert that attracted multitudes.

By the time Olomide took to the stage, the energy was high and revellers roared in excitement when he appeared. It’s evident that the 66-year-old living legend, also known for his OTT stylish fashion, still has the X-factor!

Age might not be on his side, but he’s still fit as a fiddle and where his knees failed him, his dancers took the forte and gyrated like livewires, leaving the excited revellers panting for more, and they truly gave revellers their money’s worth.

In his music career spanning more than four decades, Olomidé, has had several gold records.

He is the founder of the Quartier Latin International orchestra with many notable artists, including Fally Ipupa and Ferré Gola.

Although he is a reverred global artist, Olomidé is considered the ambassador of his own country’s and African music. Perhaps it is safe to say that the Kgosi ya Mosadi show lived up to the hype. The lady of the night, Charma Gal, who has

over the years produced many hits such as ‘Chika Dance’, ‘Selelo’, ‘Mama Ntshware ke sia le Matebele’, among many others, did not disappoint her fans as she gave them one of her best sets ever.

Currently with nine solo albums to her name, Charma Gal has gained a cult following for her command of Setswana, with her witty lyrics, punchy idioms and upbeat melodies.

Her set was about taking fans down memory lane to reflect her music journey. “The show was about showcasing my musical journey from my days with Culture Spears before branching off to a solo artist,” she said.

Some of the proceeds from the show will go towards erecting tombstones for Charma Gal’s dancers who died in a car accident several years ago.
