Volleyball championships continue

- BY SUN REPORTER

The Liquid Open Championship games continue this coming weekend at the SSKB Courts where the women’s volleyball teams will be battling to position themselves for the quarter finals.

So far, Police VI in Pool A have already secured the first position after winning all their matches, ensuring they face the team that will finish fourth in Pool B.

All other teams in both pools are yet to determine their positions, with rookies, Sebokeng of Francistown already confirmed to have failed to proceed to the next stage of the tournament after losing all their Pool B matches.

In Pool A, second-placed Mag Stimela of Mahalapye as well as thirdplaced BDF VI are already assured of a place in the Last 8 with Mafolofolo and Yaros of Maun set to battle for the final top 4 spot in a match they will play this Saturday.

Yaros, however, have an inexperienced pool of players and will surely find it difficult to crack Mafolofolo’s play code of highly decorated stars, some of whom have played at national team level.

Pool B remains open with three teams - Kutlwano, Dynamites and Kalavango - still mathematically capable of winning the group. History of recent matches between the said teams however, favours Kalavango who beat Kutlwano over the weekend. With Dynamites still on a re-building phase after losing the bulk of their players to Police VI and BDF VI, it remains highly unlikely with their inexperienced players to find their way to the top, leaving the top two places almost reserved for Kutlwano and Kalavango depending on their final matches’ results against Dynamites. Spiking Stars too, although already qualified for the Last 8 stage, will have to navigate their way out of finishing fourth by beating Dynamites in their last match as well.

The Dynamites find themselves in this precarious position of having to play all the other three teams in the group after agreeing to make way for Francistown’s Sebokeng to play all their matches on Sunday so as to avoid the rookies traveling back to Gaborone for just one game against Kalavango this coming weekend.

Thus the match between Kalavango and Dynamites, which was supposed to have been played on Sunday, has been moved to this coming Sunday.

The quarter finals will be played on November 19 while the semi finals and finals are set for December 3. The tournament also features the National Under 20 team which has been included in Pool B to help the team prepare for the AUSC Region 5 games

The Liquid Open Championship is a result of a partnership entered into between Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) and Liquid Intelligent Technologies, a communications and fibre network company.
