Hungry and broke man hangs himself

- BY NEO KOLANTSHO

A 30-year-old Zimbabwean man was found hanging by the neck from the rafters in Ditladi village near Tonota this past Sunday.

Confirming the incident, Tonota Police Station Commander Oteng Ngada said the deceased was found by his landlord inside his rented house.

“Allegations are that the Zimbabwean man had earlier during the day complained that he was under a lot of stress stating that life was unbearable in Botswana and that he was hungry and broke.

“He then went inside his house around 1200hrs and that was the last time anyone saw him alive. Around 2100hrs, a worried landlord noticed that the deceased’s house was dark, something which was unusual. She repeatedly tried knocking on the door but there was no response, she then opened the door and stepped in, that is when she saw him hanging from the roof,” Ngada said, adding that the man was certified dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The police are currently trying to locate the deceased’s family who at the time of going to print, were not yet known.

Meanwhile, the landlord has already been slapped with a charge for harbouring an illegal immigrant. Ngada shared that the minimum charge she will get is P1 000. The police boss expressed worry that many Batswana in his locality help foreigners stay in the country illegally. They have also observed that Batswana employ Zimbabweans who are in the country illegally. However, it gets hard for the police to speedily identify the foreigners when the unfortunate event of death happens.

Just last week and in a bizarre incident, a Zimbabwean illegal immigrant was found dead at Ditladi farms and cause of death is still not known. The Zimbabwean was found with whitish foams on the mouth. “Post-mortem has been conducted and we are awaiting results but fortunately, the family has been contacted and the body has been collected for burial,” Ngada said.
