AWOL: No trouble yet for absent MP Tshekedi

- BY NEO KOLANTSHO

Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) president Biggie Butale says he does not know when Member of Parliament (MP) for Serowe West Tshekedi Khama will return to Botswana.

“He has not mentioned anything to me about returning,” said Butale this week.

When asked if they are not worried about Tshekedi’s prolonged absenteeism from Parliament, Butale shared that when speaking to the MP recently about the matter, he told him that as far as he was aware, laws have not changed and that he will not be in any trouble for being absent for now - he can be absent from Parliament for three sessions without any action.

Tshekedi joined his big brother Ian Khama in South Africa early this year after he was detained together with his twin brother Anthony and wife Thea Khama by the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) over alleged possession of weapons of war.

At the time, the BPF had said that Khama went to South Africa to update his brother Ian on the latest party developments.

Nonetheless almost a year later, there is no sign of the Khamas. In fact Ian, former Botswana president recently shared on social media that people are peddling lies of him returning to Botswana soon. He said that when the time comes, he will announce his return publicly.

As for Tshekedi, he has not said anything since he fled to South Africa leaving some wondering if he has abandoned his constituents in Serowe.
