DJ Fresh and Oskido motivate upcoming artists
Botswana’s very own Thato Sikwane aka DJ Fresh and the legendary Oscar Mdlongwa (DJ Oskido) held a panel discussion at the Department of Broadcasting Boot camp where they deliberated on how an artist can stay relevant in the entertainment industry.
Oskido explained that it is difficult to start a musical career. He advised anyone entering the music industry to treat themselves as a business. He said this mentality will help upcoming musicians to seize every opportunity that comes their way.
Basic things such as a bank account and registering a company must be top of artistes’ priorities. Furthermore, he warned against entering the music industry to seek fame because the industry has a lot of pressure in itself.
Oskido asked the musicians to take care of their minds as that is their biggest asset, alongside with creating meaningful relationships. He noted that networking and an attitude that cultivates learning can be the difference between making it in the industry and failing. Oskido advised upcoming artists that it is important that one owns one’s masters, because a single song can change one’s life. Moreover, he said that in recent years the highest selling catalogues are songs that are 10 years and older which proves that people are looking for good quality and authentic music therefore artists must not copy the trend but must be trendsetters themselves. DJ Fresh said it is important to take care of one’s mental health. He urged artistes to protect their peace at all times and to avoid negative people and gossip at all costs.
“Read something that builds your career at least once a week,” Dj Fresh said, adding that they must feed that which they are passionate about and be consistent in doing it.
He stressed that the law of incremental gain is never wrong. DJ Fresh said if the attendees feed their talents everyday they will surely improve.
He warned against not getting enough sleep. He said that the most efficient people in the planet get adequate rest.
