HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL FOR NICO

- BY ISAAC PHEKO

Nico United’s struggles continue in the 2022/23 Botswana Football League (BFL) as they suffered a 1-2 defeat to the host, Masitaoka over the weekend at the Molepolole Sports Complex. The Selibe Phikwe-based team is currently holding the lowest scoring margin in the league, sitting on the 11th place with just 11 points after 11 weeks. With two tough fixtures against Orapa United and Jwaneng Galaxy on the horizon, coach Philane Ncube is looking to capitalize on the upcoming transfer window to bring in new players. So dire is the situation that bottom placed relegation candidates, Holy Ghost have two more goals than Nico. However, the Phikwe outfit boasts of a decent defence as they have only conceded 11 goals in eleven games. This puts Nico’s defensive line as the fourth best in the BFL at the current moment.

In a post-match interview, Ncube emphasized the need for

patience as they are a relatively new kids on the block with little experience having recently played in the National First Division League.

He also urged fans and the administration to be patient, noting that a change in the coach department would not necessarily result in immediate success.

Despite the challenges, Ncube remains optimistic and determined to turn the team’s fortunes around. “Even if they fire me today. Do you think the next coach will come in and make a change?”

Regarding his loss against Masitaoka, Ncube says his team came prepared and did what they could despite coming short of three points. Ncube said his team was lacking in the goalkeeping department which led to their loss.”We have to accept mistakes and go back to the drawing board.” Meanwhile , in a new twist of events, Nico United have since announced the suspension of their coach Philani Ncube through a press statement this past Tuesday afternoon. Former Nico United player Monametsi ‘Sunday’ Kelebale has taken over on the interim.
