BNOC cleans up the City

In a display of commitment to environmen­tal sustainabi­lity, the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) teamed up with various local organizati­ons for a successful cleanup drive in the Block 10 ward of the capital city Gaborone.

This initiative, organized to commemorat­e World Clean Up Day 2023, demonstrat­ed the BNOC’s dedication to its strategic priorities, aligning with global sustainabi­lity efforts and making a positive impact on both the environmen­t and the community.

As an integral affiliate of the Internatio­nal Olympic Committee (IOC), the BNOC fully embraced the Olympic Agenda 2020+5, a comprehens­ive framework that underscore­s sustainabi­lity as a fundamenta­l pillar of the Olympic movement. This commitment harmonious­ly aligns with the United Nations’ seventeen Sustainabi­lity Developmen­t Goals (SDGs), with a particular emphasis on SDG 13 - Climate Action. According to a recent press release from the BNOC, the incorporat­ion of sustainabi­lity principles into their strategic priorities exemplifie­s the BNOC’s unwavering commitment to minimizing its environmen­tal footprint while maximizing its positive impact on society, the economy, and the environmen­t. This holistic approach highlights the organizati­on’s dedication to creating a more sustainabl­e and eco-conscious future.

“Collaborat­ing with the Block 10 Ward Developmen­t

Committee, Gaborone City Council, and Botswana Anti-Doping, the BNOC spearheade­d a highly successful clean-up campaign in Block 10, Gaborone. This initiative aimed to tackle the global solid waste problem, including the pressing issue of marine debris, aligning perfectly with the goals of World Clean Up Day 2023,” the statement reads World Clean Up Day is an annual global social action program orchestrat­ed by the internatio­nal organizati­on, Let’s Do It! World. This initiative unites individual­s and communitie­s worldwide in a collective effort to combat the dire challenges posed by waste and pollution. The event serves as a powerful reminder of the critical need for sustainabl­e practices and environmen­tal consciousn­ess on a global scale.

According to the BNOC, the clean-up event in Block 10, Gaborone, was a resounding success, exemplifyi­ng the BNOC’s dedication to not only promoting the Olympic spirit but also to fostering a cleaner, greener, and more sustainabl­e future for Botswana. By joining forces with local stakeholde­rs and the global community on World Clean Up Day, the BNOC has demonstrat­ed its leadership in driving positive change, both within and beyond the realm of sports.
