Botswana’s sustainability goals elusive

- BY POTLAKO BOGATSU

Greenloop Environmental Consultants are introducing the Botswana Sustainability and ESG summit in a bid to ensure that Botswana reduces her carbon footprint.

The summit aims to amplify Botswana’s efforts of reaching Sustainable Development Goals.

Greenloop started from humble beginnings. Its founder, Lindiwe Modise, began the company after she was retrenched from work. Thanks to her hard work and tenacity, Greenloop has been able to grow.

Modise said that there is a gap locally in which companies and the government are unable to measure their sustainability goals. The summit is birthed out of the need of corporates to ramp up their efforts of being sustainable.

The summit will be held in November 22 - 23 at the Grand Aria Conference centre. The intention is to make it an annual event. Participants will be drawn from World Economic Forum, SADC, CEOs and the UNDP.

It will also be a chance for companies to network and expand their sustainability goals and knowledge.

Botswana companies have a long way to go in reaching the sustainability goals that the nation has set for itself.

The summit is expected to show Botswana the need for sustainability frameworks, and the value added by them to the corporate world.

Modise said that people need to understand that these sustainability goals are for future generations therefore the work should be taken up with the utmost commitment.

She said Botswana has a lot of policies and laws but they are not being implemented because of a lack of understanding by all stakeholders.
