BEEF STICKS PUSHING BOUNDARIES

- KEIKANTSE LESEMELA

Biltong production company, Stub Investments (Pty) Ltd aims to expand its capacity and reach all shopping centres across the country. The business specializes in the production of biltong under the name ‘Beef Sticks’. The business started its operation in 2020 in Ramotswa established by three Batswana, Lydia Leboane, Stephen Keoreng and Tswelelang Leboane.

Speaking to the Business Trends, Stub Investments Co-Founder, Lydia Leboane said they started the business during the Covid -19 era as they wanted to generate income as well as closing the market gap on food processing. “Food processing is currently an untapped market in the country, so we decided to participate in developing this market as well as generating income for ourselves.”

She said they produce high grade biltong which is well seasoned and dried fully. “Our biltong is very delicious and it is the best in the market because we have put a lot of effort in producing it. We make sure that we trim off excess fat and all the hard substances in the meat.”

Leboane said starting up was not easy due to limited funds but they managed to collectively raise P25 000 and they bought machinery and started production at home. In the first production they processed about 100kg of meat and it was also sold. She said there is a huge demand for the biltong but the company is limited by finances and they are currently working on increasing production if they can succeed on getting finance. “The market is wide open for our product but we are currently failing to meet the demand due to lack of machinery. We need a financial boost so we can expand our operations and produce more volumes.”

The company is currently contracted to supply all 72 Liquorama shops across the country but it is only supplying Gaborone and surrounding areas due to low production volumes. Since operation, the company has not been able to generate satisfactory profit due to various factors including low production levels, lack of raw materials as well as limited finance to purchase meat from other Authority (LEA) in 2021. Upon joining LEA, suppliers. They buy meat from local butcheries the business had challenges of operating without in Ramotswa. license due to limited operating space. Leboane The business was registered with Local Enterprise said through the assistance of LEA Stub Investments
