Standard Chartered Bank Botswana has launched an education trust, supplementing corporate social responsibility projects and promoting educational activities aimed at developing and nurturing early childhood education.

Through the trust, the Bank seeks to create a platform for positive change in Botswana, fostering an environment where citizens have the opportunity to realise their potential. The bank partnered with government agencies and local communities to ensure success and sustainability.

Chief Executive Officer, Mpho Masupe said before establishing the Trust, they undertook a study which revealed that there were major resource and funding constraints in successfully delivering programmes aimed at early childhood public education, particularly in the rural areas. The bank donated 400 books through the trust to Mojadife Primary School in Mogobane and 25 indigenous trees. He said they aim to address the barriers that hinder educational attainment and unlock the potential of every child in the country. “Education has always been at the heart of societal progress and economic development. It is the cornerstone upon which individuals build brighter futures, communities flourish, and nations prosper. Yet, we recognise that access to quality education remains a challenge for many, particularly in under-served communities.” One of the key initiatives of the Trust is the upgrade and resourcing of public libraries in Botswana, with a focus on creating childfriendly spaces to encourage improved literacy and a culture of reading. Standard Chartered Bank Botswana Education Trust Board Chairperson, Dr Didimalang Biorn said by upgrading public libraries, they are creating spaces of exploration and empowerment for young children. “I am excited to see the collaborations the SCB BET will form in order to meet the unique needs of each child, family and community in Botswana; ensuring that our impact is both meaningful and sustainable.”

She said the Trust will collaborate with local stakeholders, educational institutions, and community organisations to implement impactful initiatives that align with its mission. “Standard Chartered Bank invites partners, stakeholders, and the public to join hands in supporting the StanChart Botswana Education Trust and contribute to the advancement of education in Botswana.”
