Unhappy Batswana prefer South African democracy

-

Batswana are generally never happy about anything. If anything, they would rather be happy with things taking place outside their country, or about someone who is not a Motswana. They would throng a music festival headlined by a South African artiste and ignore the one with Batswana. In a country – Botswana - where there is no direct election of the President, they cry and say it is not democracy; that they want a situation where a President is voted directly just as it is done with Councillors and MPs. They publicly berate the Botswana system and shout that instead, they like the South African system. They hail South Africa as a younger democracy that however has matured faster than that of Botswana. Heck, many even say they prefer to go and live in South

Africa where democracy is better than that of Botswana. Somehow Batswana cry over what happens in their country without even caring to find out how things are done in other countries. That’s how unhappy they are. The truth is, there is no direct election of a President in South Africa, yet many have somehow convinced themselves to the contrary. In South Africa, just like in Botswana, the country’s President is drawn from the party with majority votes – no direct election. And Batswana would be happy under that system than with the one in Botswana, where the President is similarly not directly elected but drawn from a party with majority number of MPs. No wonder we are Number 137 out of 143 countries according to the World Happiness Report!
