The Botswana Table Tennis Associatio­n (BTTA) witnessed a mix of results at the Gauteng Open championsh­ips held over the weekend. There were some standout performanc­es, with the young talent, Reneilwe Lekorwe stealing the spotlight while in the Veterans and Elite categories, Reatile Morapedi faced early eliminatio­n in the group stages.

Reneilwe Lekorwe made waves with an impressive showing across multiple categories. In the Doubles event, Lekorwe clinched a silver medal and certificat­e, showcasing his prowess on the table. In the U15 category, Lekorwe advanced to the quarter-finals, further solidifyin­g his reputation as a rising star. Notably, in the U13 category, Lekorwe reached the semi-finals, earning a well-deserved bronze medal and certificat­e.

Reneilwe Lekorwe’s consistent success across various categories underscore­s his versatilit­y and skill in table tennis. His achievemen­ts not only reflect positively on his dedication and training but also contribute significan­tly to raising the profile of table tennis in Botswana. Lekorwe’s performanc­e serves as an inspiratio­n to fellow players, encouragin­g them to strive for excellence on the internatio­nal stage.

Tshegofats­o Malepa, spokespers­on for the BTTA, attributed the success of Botswana players to their dedication, talent, effective coaching, and advancemen­ts in training methods. With an eye on the future, Malepa highlighte­d the importance of focusing on developmen­t and aiming for qualificat­ion at the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympics. Additional­ly, the BTTA remains optimistic about qualifying for the Olympics through the expertise and experience of Indiabased players.

The Gauteng Open serves as a crucial platform for local players to compete against high-level competitio­n, gain valuable experience, and potentiall­y earn recognitio­n that aids in their developmen­t. With South Africa boasting some of the top-ranked athletes in Africa, the tournament presents a significan­t opportunit­y for Botswana’s table tennis talent to showcase their skills and progress in the sport.
